The story
How we planned and built it
The challenge
The valley floor floods most winters, and the farmer wanted to keep grazing sheep on the land after the panels went in.
The site also sits next to a busy river walk, so we planned screening and glare with the parish.
Our approach
Panels sit on raised frames above the flood line, rows follow the river so water drains freely, and a 120 MWh battery stores the midday peak.
Native hedgerows and wildflower margins now frame the rows, and the panels face away from the river path.
The result
Sheep still graze between the rows, and the battery now covers the evening peak for the whole town of Riverside.
Biodiversity on the site has risen by more than 20 percent since the hedgerows went in.
Key facts
94 MW of solar on raised flood-safe frames
120 MWh battery covering the evening peak
Sheep grazing kept on 90 percent of the land
Biodiversity up more than 20 percent

My sheep never left the field, and the battery means the town runs on our sunshine after dark.
